| May 4, 2004 | REVIEW - BEST OF WNY. COM Best of WNY.com/Reviews / Best of WNY Music.com Colleen Williams -self titled- By Bob Silvestri Colleen Williams is a smooth effortless singer who wraps her voice around each note she sings. On her latest self-titled release Williams shows her talent on a range a songs from standards, to Sting, to new original songs written by Bobby Jones. All the songs benefit with great arrangements from Jones, especially the standards which sound fresh and vibrant. Her band made up of Bobby Jones, Jim Kurzdorfer and Jeff Meister is nothing short of incredible. Guest artists include Tony Scozzaro, Tommy Z, Jeff Jarvis, Bobby Militello, Steve Curry, Jerry Livingston, Wendell Rivera, George Kane, Dave Kayne and The Hit Men Horns. “It’s Probably Me”, a Sting/Eric Clapton collaboration, starts the CD and features Jeff Jarvis on flugelhorn. Tommy Z lends a nice touch to “Georgia On My Mind” while Bobby Militello adds his touches on alto sax to “Call Me Irresponsible”. Williams does a great run through on Gershwin’s “Someone To Watch Over Me” with its up-tempo arrangement from Jones. Her marriage of romance and song is best shown on all four Jones penned originals. “For Awhile”, “Until You Come Back”, “Just Be In Love” and “Perfect Love” show this partnership of writer and performer to be in tune with each other. | July 27, 2003 | COLLEEN WILLIAMS RELEASES LONG AWAITED FOLLOW-UP CD On July 27th, singer Colleen Williams will release "Colleen Williams," the much anticipated follow-up to her highly successful 1998 CD "Torched." Colleen Williams and her band, The Bobby Jones Trio, one of Western New York’s most celebrated musical groups, appear at many of the area’s best known venues (Adam’s Mark Hotel, Pranzos, Fanny’s, The Bijou Grille , The Sphere Entertainment Complex, and the Seneca Niagara Casino). The group is also featured at the area’s most prestigious ongoing concert events including: The Albright Knox Summer Concert Series, Rockin’ At The Knox, The M&T Plaza Concert Series, The Ellicottville Jazz Festival, Cabaret In The Square Concert Series and The Gateway International Jazz Festival and many concerts at the Tralf. This body of work has earned the group much critical acclaim including "Best Local Act" by Nightlife Magazine and "Best Jazz-Small Band" by the Buffalo Musicians’ Association. It is the versatility and virtuosity of the group combined with Colleen’s vocal strength and energy that has produced the trademark sound leading to the group’s success and popularity. For many of Williams’ fans the new CD, "Colleen Williams," will be a departure from her debut CD. "Torched," a collection of stylish and sultry torch songs, introduced Western New York audiences to Williams and helped establish her as one of the area’s premier entertainers. The new album, however, reflects more of Williams’ versatility and range as a singer. The album is an eclectic collection of songs, including four original tunes. Backed by Jones’ wonderfully unique and original arrangements, Williams makes them her own. Colleen explains, "Working with Bobby, Jim and Jeff for the past five years has allowed me to grow not only as a singer, but also as an artist. It has pushed me to explore, to reach beyond. I have come a long way since the first album, both personally and professionally, and for me this CD reflects that experience." Bobby Jones, Williams’ musical director and the album’s producer and arranger adds, "Colleen has a unique and multifaceted style. Her passion and energy as a performer are what set her apart. All of this combined with her vocal strength and range allow her to, at times, be sexy and sultry, playful and fun, or sweet and poignant." For Williams and Jones, who have been partnered both personally and professionally for the past four years, this project has been a labor of love. Colleen says, "Maybe it sounds a bit clichéd, but this project has been a dream of ours for so long. We are very excited to see it finally realized. It represents not only the result of our professional collaboration, but also of our very special personal relationship. The Musicians The album features a veritable who’s who of Buffalo’s finest musicians. Leading the ensemble is the legendary keyboardist, Bobby Jones, who also serves as producer and arranger on the project. All twelve tracks of the album feature Jones’ signature style on, not only acoustic piano, but also synthesizer and the Hammond B3 organ. Jones also wrote four of the songs on the CD. Jim Kurzdorfer, bassist (Spyrogyra) and Jeff Meister, drummer (Michael Civisca) are integral parts of Williams’ band and lend their considerable talents to many of the tracks. Williams is also joined by some very special musical guests. Steve Curry on drums (Gap Mangione Band) and Jerry Livingston on bass (Rick James Band) join Jones on organ in a rousing gospel version of Hallelujah, I Love Him So, and again on the hauntingly beautiful Sting tune, It’s Probably Me. Wendell Rivera, well-known Latin percussionist and recording artist, adds his special touch to I Only Have Eyes For You and one of the Bobby Jones’ originals, Until You Come Back. George Kane on guitar (Natural Elements), Dave Kayne on vibes (Wendell Rivera Band) join the trio on the delightful David Frishberg original, I Want To Be A Sideman. Well-known blues guitarist, Tommy Z is joined by The Hit Men Horns on a wonderful production of the classic Georgia. Tommy Z plays again on another of Jones’ original tunes, For Awhile. Jazz fusion guitarist, Tony Scozzaro (Gamelon) plays on Hallelujah, I Love Him So, and his beautiful guitar is featured on Just Be In Love, Jones’ original composition about self-affirmation. Two of Buffalo’s musical luminaries also make special guest appearances on the CD. Bobby Militello (of The Dave Brubeck Quartet fame and owner of The Tralf) plays his soulful alto sax on a very special arrangement of the timeless classic, Call Me Irresponsible. Jeff Jarvis, internationally renowned musician (trumpet and flugelhorn) and jazz clinician adds magic to It’s Probably Me and Until You Come Back. |
